- In a large bowl, mash the black beans with a fork or potato masher until mostly smooth but still slightly chunky.
- Add breadcrumbs, red onion, garlic, cumin, chili powder, lime juice, 1 tablespoon olive oil, salt, and pepper. Mix well until fully combined.
- Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each into a patty about 0.75 inch thick.
- Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add the patties and cook for 4 to 5 minutes per side, until golden brown and crispy.
- Serve on buns with your favorite toppings such as avocado, lettuce, tomato, and a dollop of chipotle mayo.
Notes
For a gluten-free version, use certified gluten-free breadcrumbs. These burgers can also be baked at 375°F (190°C) for 20 minutes, flipping halfway through, for a lighter option. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
