- In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the butter in the microwave for 30–45 seconds until fully melted.
- Add the sugar and stir until well combined. Mix in the egg and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Sift in the flour, cocoa powder, and salt. Stir until just combined—do not overmix. Fold in chocolate chips if using.
- Divide the batter evenly among four microwave-safe mugs or one larger microwave-safe dish.
- Microwave on high for 1.5 to 2 minutes for mugs (or 3 minutes for a single dish), or until the edges are set but the center is still slightly soft. Let cool for 1–2 minutes before serving.
Notes
For best results, do not overbake—microwave wattages vary, so start checking at 1.5 minutes. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dusting of powdered sugar. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
